Gemini Lounge Orchestra – Two Years on the Rock (2007)

  • Sampledelic
  • Sound collage
  • Spoken word
  • Electronic music
  • Avant-garde
  • Conceptual
  • Experimentalism
  • Hauntology
  • Plunderphonics

The Rock oli tuntud kurikuulus vangla Alcatraz'i saarel Californias, kus istusid gangsterid (tuntuim kahtlemata Al Capone). Käesolev vaade kaheaastasele perioodile võtab aega kõigest 17 minutit (tõsi, mõtteliselt on need jaotatud 18 osaks). Reliis on osa Proc-Recs-nimelise eksperimentaalplaadifirma kogust. Kuna väljaandmise aastaks on 2007, ei tohi ära unustada, et sel ajal ei olnud vanade sämplite põhise, kummitusliku alatooniga muusika haip kuigi märkimisväärne - see saabus pigem mõned aastad hiljem; viljakas pinnas oli kahtlemata olemas - Irdial Discs'i The Conet Project: Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations oli üllitatud ja isegi uuesti üllitatud ja The Caretaker oli kamaluga albumeid reliisinud. Wilco sämplis esimesest ning tänu tülile autoriõiguste üle jõudis laiemasse teadvusesse. Hiljem näitas taset selles vallas The Fucked Up Beat ning selle õigusjärglane CLOUDWARMER (kes hiljuti üllatas kolm albumit korraga).

Noskovsolegs – Urbanspace (2009)

  • Hard techno
  • Leftfield
  • Powerelectronics
  • Digital hardcore
  • Rhythmic noise

Comment: Recent Music Heroes arrives at the discography of Proc-Records. Noskovsolegs` two-notch issue (proc259) is unique in that context because there have been only a couple of releases since involving a video file. As the title says it involves an industrialized landscape of a city, robotically moving plastic statues of comics heroes with frightening angry faces all of that being subjugated to flashing video treatment. Musically it is logically bound because of providing a bond between harsh rhythmic patterns, and white noise drenched mechanic noises. Indeed, by watching the visual scale of my music player I can say all the frequencies are cranked up to the maximum degree. It can be assumed it is the kind of anti-rave music because with such frequencies it may be possible to kill the audience. Very harsh, very peripheral.

Gemini Lounge Orchestra – Two Years on the Rock (2007)

  • Sampledelic
  • Avant-garde
  • Alternative
  • Film noir
  • Electronic music
  • Sound collage
  • Leftfield
  • Exploitation music

Comment: I am back again to another 17-minute track (day before yesterday I reviewed Pollux`s Naked Lights) though the recent issue under a resident artist within the Proc-Records` discography (proc003) is more based on spoken word samples accompanied by slowly slinging rhythms. The former element is based around the snippets from gangster motion pictures. //”Where is my fucking money?/I don`t know!/Where is my money?/It is in the box/I am talking here not you/Fuck you! If you could open up your mouth then you could shut up/Fuck it yourself!”/Your fucking phony/You get me out of here//. Indeed, it is a dialogue between a young layer and an experienced mob who is arrested and insists to get out of jail. And there is up shooting in the ending part as well though those sordid speech moments and ill-omened sonic themes and nervous broken beat and retro-futurist haunting electronica and orchestration blended appearances are at times jettisoned for more flamboyant, just very lite orchestrated moments which chime thereby in a fake, excessively emotional way. In a final part one can hear affectionate shouting and imploring mercy which is followed by shooting and ultimately by execution. In a word, it is all about very inferior aspects of human kind. However, as a sonic statement and formal sound collage it must be astounding because it compels the listener to think of these adverse situations and choices in life. Get it as a preventive act against the criminal career.

Mega – Scanner (2008)

  • Alternative dance
  • Dub
  • Electronic music
  • Deep tekno

Comment: I am pleased to be back at the discography of Proc-records (proc041), and the recent issue is a two-track issue by Mega, called Scanner. There are represented lots of rhythms, spaced-out synthesizers and shades of dub-inflected and electronic origin. These rhythms are set up at a mid-tempo range. The dub influences are prominently put forth at Autumnscanner though later it will be intermingled with catchy tekno rhythms. The second track Abstinent Freakno is more about deep tekno shuffling with microscopic noises as if a track coming silently through the hours between the night and early morning. Because of that the outing can be considered as the sort of music, which used to be played late at a party. In a word, the result is a solid drift between arousing rhythms and laid-back milieus. Get it to insert it into your home system.

Modek – Acid Before Lunch (2008)

  • Techno
  • Tekno
  • Alternative
  • Acid techno
  • Acid house

Comment: Recent Music Heroes is back again at the discography of Proc-Records, this time listening to Modek`s 4-notch issue (proc054) where the most pre-eminent word is “acid”. Indeed, taking acid before lunch and after lunch in the way it happened to be in the United Kingdom in the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s. The current issue could be considered a tribute to it or a solid follow-up to it. There were such styles as acid techno, and acid house, which strongly influenced the club/dance music scene and alternative rock/indie scene locally and a little bit later worldwide. I like Modek`s way to set up the path and then unleash all his energy and anxiety into it to foster it in a quite maniac way. However, more elaborated and hypnotized rhythms one can enjoy in the final part of the issue (Acid004). Get slammed and stoned by these tectonic vibes.

Spacecraft – The Mission Continues (2007)

  • Abstract
  • Techno
  • Lo-fi
  • DIY
  • Electronic music
  • Experimental techno
  • Avant-techno

Comment: this issue is from a decade being released approximately 10 years ago is a mind-provoking one due to those obtuse rhythmic patterns and dull synthesizer-based progressions. As I said already this issue was released roughly 10 years ago thereby foreseeing all those gentle tape label-based issues residing proudly at Bandcamp today. On the other side, it is also about the past and surfaces as a tribute issue to those industrial music combos that emerged four decades ago and later started to focus more on dance-appealed rhythms and less sonic experiments (for instance, Cabaret Voltaire, and Throbbing Gristle). The issue is a part of the immense discography of Proc-records (proc005). Thematically the laconic issue is related to space objects, and space invasions. More profoundly, it is all about asteroids, black holes, laser radiation, and conquests. In a word, it is a solid techno ghost from the past.

Micron – Architecture (2007)

  • Minimal techno
  • DIY
  • Lo-fi

Comment: the US-based Micron's 5-track issue chimes like it had been produced on the Android-based Walk Band application being elegantly primitive and appealingly rough. However, timely it was not possible because the issue was disclosed in 2007 before the era of smartphones started off. Furthermore, the artist exploits a quite linear way to produce rhythms. Otherwise it could be said it is a case of minimal techno music. It is saturated with slight changes regarding the beat rate and the relation and combination between thumping bass kicks and hi-hat and other drums with higher timbres. A distinctive thread of the issue is a DIY feel throughout the course. Last but not least - the issue was recorded mono. What else could I add to the item – indeed, the lo-fi men began produce techno music. The issue is the 15th in the discography of Proc-records.

Abortionist – Abortionist. (2008)

  • Noise
  • Digicore
  • Rhythmic noise
  • Freeformfreakout
  • Digital hardcore
  • Gabber
  • Non-music
  • Avant-garde
  • Experimentalism

Comment: I can remember for some guys who tried to boast their knowledge about dance music by talking of gabber as the most intense and fast-paced one. Ok, it happened approximately 18 years ago it does mean 10 years before the current issue was created. Indeed, Abortionist’s experiments are about gabber music but with an obviously different angle than a common exemplar of it – this is the devastating deconstruction of the style. More profoundly, it might remind of it but it is studded with noisy, rhythmical piercing drones. Because of that the main point of the issue is diffused and divided. It does not use sequencers to create the rhythms but used to extract certain harsh frequencies from the periphery of sonic scale. In any cases, the result is staggering, poignant and overwhelming. This very short-running issue is a part of the discography of proc-records (proc062).
